Phil Mickelson fights back at the PGA Championship
Strong weather was expected at this year’s PGA Championship, being held at Kiawah Island. The Ocean Course is located near the beach and Kiawah is known for its strong winds. So, as it happened, day two brought with it some extremely high speed winds.
The winds were as fast as 30 miles per hour. In such tough conditions, it was difficult to score under par and there were only four people who broke the par in round two.
Phil Mickelson, Tiger Woods, Vijay Singh and the over night’s leader Carl Pettersson were the only ones who scored under par. Rest of them could not cope up with the wind pressure and they sprayed the ball all around.
Phil has not been in a good run of form recently and nothing big was expected from him. His first round performance was no different either. He shot one-over in the first round.
During round two, with such strong winds blowing, nothing much was expected from him but he defied his critics and launched a strong come back in a bid to get his fifth major title.
Mickelson shot one-under in the second round, a score which is not very alarming but considering the situation, is was a pretty decent score. He bogeyed twice in the second round but his birdies on the 2nd, 10th and 11th
hole meant that he remained under par for the day.
The Australian trio at the Championship faltered as well. Even they could not control the ball. Three-over par for Adam Scott was pretty surprising because at Royal Lytham, he controlled the ball beautifully.
Currently, there is a three-way tie at the top Vijay Singh, Tiger Woods and Carl Pettersson, all lead the pack with a four-under par score.
Tiger will be looking to add his 15th major trophy in his cabinet. By doing so, he will take another step forward towards the illustrious record for the most major victories, held by the legend Jack Nicklaus.
Jack has 18 majors while Tiger is currently sitting on 14. With such a long time to go before Tiger retires, many believe that he will surely take over that record one day.
