Phil Mickelson finds form at the right time
Since May this year, Phil Mickelson experienced a dip in his game. He was nowhere so to be seen on the PGA Tour. However, since the playoffs, it seems that Phil is back in to the rhythm, which took him to the top of the world rankings at one time.
A T4 finish at the Deutsche Bank Open was good enough for the people to know that Lefty is back. However, a T2 finish at the BMW Championship clearly signalled his intent for the Tour Championship.
These are excellent signs for Mickelson, as he now has chance to land in the FedEx Cup and $10 million purse.
Mickelson is currently fourth in the FedEx Cup standings and after the rule change that took place last year, he stands a good chance to bag the cup.
According to the amended rule, points are reset after the BMW Championship and anybody in the top five can claim the Cup with a victory at Tour Championship.
Tour Championship is not the only the thing that is up ahead. Just after that, there is the showdown between Europe and America in Ryder Cup.
Team USA will be depending on him, as he is the experienced pro on the tour and has played in numerous Ryder Cups.
Mickelson really got going in the third round at Crooked Stick, where he equalled his career birdie record in a round by scoring 10 birdies.
If it had not been a magnificent display of golfing skills by Rory McIlroy, Phil would have certainly won at Crooked Stick.
"I knew this week was going to be a good week," he told reporters. "I came out a little bit anxious the front nine on Thursday and didn't play well.
"I kind of settled in and started to make some putts, started to make some birdies but the game feels really good,” said Mickelson, who has won only once this season.
Mickelson is really happy that he back to his normal self and he knows that this was important, as the Tour Championship and Ryder Cup are just round the corner.
"It's finally back and I'm looking forward to being in the mix tomorrow but also the Tour Championship and the Ryder Cup, I'm just glad that it's back in time".
