Phil Mickelson focuses on short game before the US Open
Phil Mickelson, under the supervision of golf pro Dave Pelz, worked on his short game at the Olympic Club, on Saturday, in preparations for the second major title of the year, US Open, scheduled to be played from June 14 to 17, 2012.
Mickelson continuously practiced hitting the ball on the greens. Moreover, he tried different angles to get the maximum out of his workout.
According to Pelz, Mickelson was brilliant during the practice round and he can pose a real threat to his opponents on the venue believed to be one of the toughest in the world.
"His short game is good, although this course is very tough," Pelz said.
"In the rough, you can see the ball, find it, and it's not unfair or awful, but it's very difficult in the sense that the ball sits down, the grass is strong and even though you can get a club on it, you don't know if it's going to come out soft and just
dump right in front of you, or if it's going to spin or not spin. The greens are very firm and fast. We worked on it for two straight days".
If whatever Pelz said is true, then it is good news for Mickelson’s fans, as he withdrew from the Memorial Tournament after recording a 79 in the opening round.
It was his last appearance while tweaking his game for the US Open. Mickelson blamed mental fatigue as the major reason for his poor performance at the Muirfield Village Golf Club.
On the other hand, his playing partners, Bubba Watson and Rickie Fowler, had different views. They told that Mickelson was a little distracted by the use of cameras by the spectators on the course.
According to them, the left hander also sent a text message to PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem about the use of cell phones on the course.
Therefore, it is believed that the distraction could also be the reason for his withdrawal from the event. Whatever the reason may be, he must have felt really bad about leaving the tournament in between.
Analysts said that he is a man of a class, whose confidence cannot be shattered by such incidents. He is still one of the hot favourites to win the US Open this year.
