Phil Mickelson gets a spot at the Ryder Cup after the U.S PGA Championship
All the players want to be a part of the most prestigious event of the year, the Ryder Cup. To actually get selected in the Ryder Cup team, one has to perform pretty well throughout the year. Phil Mickelson was one of the players who were quite close to
qualifying for the cup.
In the 2012 U.S. PGA Championship, which took place on the 9th of August, Mickelson made sure that he gets selected in the Ryder Cup team.
The fighting ground for the Championship was the Kiawah Island Golf Resort, the Ocean Course, where the biggest names in the world of golf fought for four days for glory.
On the first day, Mickelson only managed to put on a one-over par on the board with four bogeys and three birdies.
On the second day, Mickelson managed to score three birdies and two bogeys, which made his score one-under par for the day and his total score after the two days was level par.
During the third round again, Mickelson scored a one-over par. This time, it was with three bogeys and two birdies. The total score after this round again became one-over par.
The last day was the worst one for the American. He carded four birdies and four bogeys and ended the day with a double bogey, which made his score three-over par after the end of the last day.
Thus, Mickelson qualified for the Ryder cup team for the ninth straight year. This is an American record.
In an interview after the tournament came to an end, the American professional golfer said, “The first two days, I didn't strike it that well, but I fought hard to stay in there. The last two days my game started to come around. Even though the score wasn't
there, I hit a lot of nice shots, and I'm optimistic now coming into the FedEx Cup”.
He was happy with the tournament and the way things turned out to be in the end. “It's a great test of golf, because the wonderful thing about Kiawah here is that if you hit a good shot, you're rewarded, and you get a good result every time, and if you hit
a bad shot, you have a bad result,” he added.
