Phil Mickelson going through a rough patch
Phil Mickelson is considered to be one of the best players in the world. He turned professional in the year 1992 and ever since has been playing very consistent golf.
He has always been able to impress the spectators with his game. Unfortunately, currently the American professional golfer is going through a rough patch.
Mickelson has not been able to perform as he used to. In his last 13 performances, he has broken the par just twice. This is a very poor performance by his standards.
Mickelson has occupied the second position in the world ranking for several years. Now, he has dropped to the 17th spot and he might fall a bit more due to his present form.
The last tournament the 42-year-old played was the British Championship Open. In the Open, he carded three-over par and eight-over par on the first and second day, respectively. Due to his poor performance in the first two days, Mickelson was not able to
make the cut.
Mickelson has blamed lack of concentration on his game as the sole reason for his recent poor performances. In an interview, he said, “One of the biggest areas ... is that mentally I haven't been focusing as fine as I need to”.
“I've been letting where I don't want the ball to go kind of creep in, in my head, as opposed to where I want it to go,” he added.
Till now Mickelson has bagged four major titles and 48 professional wins. Out of these 48 professional wins, 40 came from the PGA Tour, 7 came from European Tour and 1 came from Challenge Tour.
He is only 42 years old and is part of the world golf hall of fame. He can easily bounce back from this rough patch. He just needs to bring his old game back.
“If I look back over the last couple of months, it's easier to identify where I've been going off, and I haven't played with the same purpose, whether its approach heading into the golf tournament or whether it's on each individual shot,” he said.
“That's what I'm going to try to focus on these coming months to get this back on track”.
Mickelson is going to come back with a new motive. He has done it before and he can do it again. He just needs to concentrate fully on his game. He has achieved a great deal till now and is not stopping.
Analysts are of the opinion that the American professional golfer has been a golf icon for many years and has achieved so much in the past years. Like every rise has a fall. He must accept that he has gotten old. He cannot pull off what he used to.
It is time for young players to rule the leaderboard, like Rory McIlroy. Mickelson should retire and give way to the new players.
There has been a great deal of debate on this topic. Mickelson himself believes he still has a few good years and can easily bag some trophies in this time. He agrees with the fact that he is going through a rough patch. On the contrary, he is certain that
he will bounce back.
Will Phil Mickelson be able to retire on his own terms or not? Only time can tell.
