Phil Mickelson in contention at Kiawah
Phil Mickelson has not been in the best of forms recently. He missed the cut at The Open and Greenbrier Classic and finished way below at T43 in the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational.
With the 2012 PGA Championship about to start, Lefty has the best of chances to turn around his season. His form might not be pretty but the odds are pointed in his favour.
The championship will take place on Oceanic Course at Kiawah. The Oceanic Course offers numerous birdie opportunities and it is set out in a way that will benefit those players who are willing to take the risks.
Phil is a long hitter and with the favourable conditions, his drivers will give him an added advantage. Mickelson is known as a risk taker on the PGA Tour and he is the sort of guy who can shoot really low scores on this course.
If we look at Phil’s performance over the years he played on the tour, we will see that he has always adjusted in the windy conditions and his best has come while playing along the coasts.
Jim Mackay, Mickelson’s caddie is also an expert of windy conditions. His presence at Kiawah will be a major boost for his game.
Another big factor that adds to his advantage is that he likes to keep a low profile. This year as well, he is not being tipped as the favourite to win the PGA Championship.
This will definitely be a plus point, as he can just walk in and play his game quietly without anybody having an eye on him.
Phil Mickelson will be teeing off on Thursday with Padraig Harrington and Davis Love III. He is extremely happy and comfortable while playing alongside the USA Ryder Cup Captain, Davis Love III.
Padraig Harrington is also on good terms with Phil. This can lead up to his better performances during the rounds.
Tiger Woods will also be looking bag the 15th major of his career. Tiger was close at Royal Lytham but he needs to do his best if he wants to challenge the record of the most number of wins held by none other than Jack Nicklaus.
