Phil Mickelson: late entry in the Scottish Open
Phil Mickelson makes a late entry in the Scottish Open 2012. On Friday, he had his third bad start and missed the cut at the Greenbrier Classic.
After the three bad starts, he decided another start could not hurt and went for the Scottish Open. There was only one problem with Mickelson’s new plan: the Open had closed its entries on the 29th of June.
The 42-year-old asked his management team to see if he can still appear in the tournament at the Stuart’s Castle as the deadline to register was over. Nonetheless, an exception was made for Mickelson.
His management team was able to get him a spot in the Open, which starts from the 12th of July. The Director of the Scottish Open Peter Adams explained how it was possible.
He said that they got a call from Mickelson’s management team, asking for a spot for him. Luckily for Mickelson, there were still invitations left for the Open.
After that, it was just the matter of voting by the committee and everyone unanimously decided to let Mickelson play in the Open.
Mickelson has had a poor run for a while. The four-time major winner finished at the 65th spot on the US Open. He is headed to play the Scottish Open, where he started off with his career. He needs his form back and this is the best way to do
it.
The number 16th in the world ranking is going to join the world number one Luke Donald, Ireland’s Padraig Harrington, Martin Kaymer and local favourties Martin Laird and Paul Lawrie.
These are the players who are going to be in the spot light throughout the tournament.
Mickelson has not been playing well recently. A player who is confident about his game is Padraig Harrington.
In an interview, he said, “This year, if you played the Irish Open and now you’re going to play the Scottish Open then you have two great chances to get eight rounds of competitive links golf”.
“I think that’s the best preparation you can get for playing The Open because links golf is just not the same game as what we normally play,” he added.
