Phil Mickelson makes a strong comeback while the Ryder Cup approaches
While the Ryder Cup is approaching, Phil Mickelson succeeded in making a strong comeback on the US circuit by finishing tied for the fourth position at the Deutsche Bank Championship, on Monday, September 3, 2012.
For the last few months, Mickelson was struggling with his form and barely made it to the top-eight players in the FedEx Cup standings, who automatically qualified for the US Ryder Cup team.
This week, he managed to put together four solid rounds and posted a 14-under par tournament score – six behind the winner, Rory McIlroy.
While talking to the PGA Tour’s official website, he admitted that he lost control over his clubs in the past few months.
However, he practiced hard and tweaked his game, in order to make solid preparations for the biennial event, scheduled to start from September 28, 2012.
He believes that he made numerous improvements in his driving technique and complemented that by a good display of the game with his putter.
“This was a good week for me because the last couple of weeks I've started to kind of piece my game back together,” the four-time major champion said. “The irons have been good, putter is getting to where I want it to be, and I've been driving the ball well.
So the pieces are finally there”.
“Even though I didn't put myself in a position to make a run at the leaders, my game feels like it's back, and I'm ready to start competing here in the next couple, and I'm going to see if I can get one of the next two,” added the 42-year-old American.
He also confirmed that he met with Love and talked about the possible four picks for the US Ryder Cup team.
When asked about the probable names, he refused to comment on that. He stated that Love will officially make the announcement on Tuesday.
In the meantime, Tiger Woods, who has been playing brilliantly right from the start of the season, finished third on the leaderboard.
McIlroy, who recorded his third victory in the 2012 PGA Tour season, joined Woods, as the only second player to achieve this feat this year.
