Phil Mickelson opts out of the Crowne Plaza Invitational – Golf News

The four-time major champion Phil Mickelson has decided not to participate in the Crowne Plaza Invitational at the Colonial Country Club, scheduled to start from May 24 to 27, 2012.
Mickelson has always wanted to make Colonial as one of his favourite stops on the PGA Tour. However, he believes that the changes on the golf course have changed his mind about appearing in the event any more.
According to him, the changes really do not suit his style of game and it will be useless if he tees off in the tournament.
The major changes include the placement of fairway bunkers, which can definitely affect Mickelson’s game because he is known for big hit.
Therefore, he will not be getting any advantage of his long drives if there will be too much bunkers on the fairways.
He is the two-time winner of the tournament, as he registered victories in 2000 and 2008.
He also participated in the ‘pink out’ campaign held at the Colonial to make people aware about breast cancer when his wife Amy was also suffering from the same disease.
"I will always be appreciative for what they did for me and Amy in '09. It was like the most timely and generous gesture and something that I'll always cherish," Mickelson said.
"And having won there, I really have a lot of fond memories and special feelings for Colonial. But the course doesn't really suit my game anymore, and I'm not sure what that means (in regards to future appearances)”.
Mickelson did not play the tournament in 2009 when the tournament officials held the awareness campaign. However, he did return to action in 2010 and missed the cut because of the changes on the course.
He is currently enjoying the best of his form, as he has recorded a total of five top-ten finishes in the 12 events he played in the 2012 PGA Tour so far.
Mickelson’s best performance of the season came in the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am where he came out of the course as victorious.
Recently, he participated in the HP Byron Nelson Championship and tied for the seventh position after carding a six-under par tournament score.
