Phil Mickelson performs below par at the Players Championship - Golf News
Phil Mickelson has blamed the difficulty of the course for his average performance during the Players Championship at the TPC Sawgrass Stadium Course from May 10 to 13, 2012.
Mickelson recorded a three-under par tournament score to tie for the 25th position on Sunday after recording 71-71-70-73 in the four rounds.
According to Mickelson, he could not shoot the scores he wanted in the tournament. He told that the course was highly demanding in terms of ball striking.
He said that he played really good golf throughout the week. However, his putting was not good enough to earn him a better place on the leaderboard.
Mickelson’s record in putting had been really great since the start of the 2012 golf season, which helped him greatly in making good finishes including a win in the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am.
On the contrary, the Players Championship witnessed him lose the grip over his putting technique and missed several chances that could have helped him record lower scores.
“I played pretty well this week,” Mickelson said. “I did not score well. I didn't salvage the shots around the greens the way I wanted to. I didn't putt that well. Certainly I didn't putt as well as I had been putting all year and didn't post a number”.
The final-round performance was worst of all, as he went over par for the first time in the tournament. Yet, he believes that he will return back to form in no time, as a little extra effort will lift him up in the upcoming tournaments.
“When it's all said and done, the only thing that matters in this game and in this tournament is the score, and I didn't post a good enough score,” he said. “But the game doesn't feel far off; just a little click here or there and hopefully I'll get it turned
around”.
In the meantime, Matt Kuchar jumped to the top of the leaderboard to earn his first ever victory in the Players Championship after recording a two-under par 70 in the final round.
The overnight leader Kevin Na failed to hold on to his lead and faltered to register a four-over par 76 on Sunday that slipped him down the leaderboard at the tied for the seventh position.
