Phil Mickelson predicts a Masters victory for either Rory McIlroy or Tiger Woods
Phil Mickelson, the delectable “lefty”, who is all set to land his fourth green jacket at the revered Augusta National, has probably the biggest heart of all players in the field.
While the rest of the top-50 on the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR) never seize to praise themselves ahead of the star-studded event, Mickelson sticks to what he thinks is the truth and nothing but the truth.
The 41-year-old came out with his surprising comments about raging Rory McIlroy and placed him as the best bet for this year’s event.
He said, "I think Rory will continue his great play and as he learns the subtleties of this course I think he's going to win here a number of times. I think he's an incredible talent".
Mickelson is particularly watchful of the soft playing conditions at this week at Augusta National, which received considerable rain during the practice round on Wednesday.
He added, "When you get soft conditions like we have this week - and which we had at the US Open last June - he's going to light it up".
In a recent survey, Mickelson was regarded as the most favourite of the corporate America and won most of the votes in his favour.
He has won the green jacket three times in his grizzled career, the last one coming in 2010.
Mickelson also threw his weight behind the resurging Tiger Woods, ignoring the fact that he will be part of the field at the same event.
He added, “I think it’s huge for him, and I think he’s going to have a great week, because he’s obviously been playing well and to have won heading in I think gives him a lot of confidence. Sucks for us”.
Mickelson won the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am last month and pulled in another strong finish, a runner-up at Northern Trust Open where he lost on the Playoff.
He is hoping to bag his fourth Masters title before finally switching to Senior Tour. Mickelson has 48 professional victories in the course of his career, with 40 of them coming on the PGA Tour alone.
