Phil Mickelson reportedly sends a text message to Tim Finchem during Memorial Tournament
The four-time major champion Phil Mickelson has been drawn into the spotlight after he sent a text message to PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem about the distraction he had during the first round of the Memorial Tournament last week.
Mickelson withdrew from the event after carding a 79 in the opening round, stating that he had mental fatigue that did not allow him to continue in the event.
However, it has recently been reported that Mickelson sent a text message at the sixth fairway, complaining about the use of cell phones to take pictures on the course.
Bubba Watson and Rickie Fowler also confirmed the news that the players sometimes had to back off from their shots after getting distracted by the flash or voice of the camera.
“Phil’s a great player and a great champion, and it just took him out of his game. It’s sad. It’s sad that cell phones can make or break a championship,” Watson said.
As he withdrew from the event, stating that he had mental fatigue, it will not be an issue because players are allowed to withdraw from any event with this specific cause.
However, the use of cell phones by players on the course is not allowed and the text message has gained the attention of the PGA Tour officials.
However, they have not disclosed any information regarding the disciplinary action to be taken, if any.
Last year, the PGA Tour lifted the ban on use of cell phones on the course. However, the policy also stated that the spectators will only be allowed to use them in specific areas.
“With the revised policy, spectators are allowed to carry mobile phones on the golf course .... Phone calls may be made or received in designated areas only... No video recording is permitted at any time during the week, and no photography will be permitted
during official competition rounds,” the policy states.
Golf commentators believe that it will not be easy to revoke the policy, as it may decrease the attendance on the golf courses.
Therefore, some other security measures should be adopted that can help in limiting the usage of cell phones at places other than the designated areas.
