Phil Mickelson runs around Singapore to avoid Disqualification
As rain and lightning hammered the Serapong and the Tanjong golf club at The Barclays Singapore Open 2010, Phil Mickelson decided to deal with some logistic issues and nearly avoided disqualification.
The Barclays Singapore Open 2010 commenced from the 11th of November till the 14th of November and hosted a field of 204 players all fighting for the $ 6 million prize money.
According to the latest reports, the initial round of the tournament had been a bit slow as rain pounded the Singapore grounds for a full 4 hour stretch. As far as the last round is concerned, it followed the same fate.
The R4 of the tournament was halted for a good 5 and a half hours after Singapore was flooded around noon. The electrical storm is said to attack The Sentosa GC as well as the Changi Airport that closed for about 2 hours.
As far as Mickelson is concerned, when rain came, he left the golf course. The forty year old had covered 11 holes of the last round of the event and left the golf course to his hotel room when play halted for a 5 hour stint.
According to the world number four, he was under the impression that play would commence today at seven thirty in the morning.
“That’s why I left the golf course” Mickelson said.
The lefty blamed it on the logistics, he said that the main reason he left the golf course is because first he had to get a new hotel room, and then he had to make sure that his luggage gets off the plane passably. If this wasn’t
enough, the forty year old had to check if his pilot was fine with the idea of spending another night in Singapore. So basically Phil Mickelson was dealing with his logistic concerns that had risen due to the rain storm.
So when the rain halted and the game commenced, Mickelson had a very short span of time to make it back to the golf course. According to the golfer from California, when he was informed that the play was about to commence, all
he needed was a good driver who could zip his way back easily. Fortunately, Mickelson made his way back on time and stepped into the course just as one of his playing partner's teed off.
What was more fortunate, was that the delay didn’t get to the 1992 turned professional at all. According to the forty year old statistics, he carded a par at first and then a birdie which relieved him a great deal. All that Mickelson
was happy about was him avoiding disqualification.
“I’m happy to get a penalty rather than a disqualification.” Mickelson said.
