Phil Mickelson set to make his ninth start in the Wells Fargo Championship – Golf News
Phil Mickelson is set to participate in the Wells Fargo Championship for the ninth time in his career, as he only missed the inaugural event in 2003.
In his eight appearances, he has been a great performer and recorded a total of six top-10 finishes.
In the 2012 PGA Tour season, he made a slow start and failed to register a top-25 finish in the first three events he played. He also missed the cut in the Farmers Insurance Open.
While playing the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, he made a great comeback and registered the 40th PGA Tour victory of his career.
Right after that, he appeared in the Transitions Championship and took the second spot after losing to Luke Donald in the playoffs.
In addition to that, he tied for fourth and third in the last two events; Shell Houston Open and Masters Tournament, respectively.
The Wells Fargo Championship will be his first start since his appearance at the Augusta National Golf Club.
However, he will tee off with a completely different frame of mind, as he has recently been inducted into World Golf Hall of Fame & Museum in St. Augustine, Florida.
Therefore, he would like to travel to the induction ceremony with a trophy to his name, especially when there are four top-10-ranked players participating in the event.
“I’m really excited to get back playing,” Mickelson said. “I’ve had three weeks of not playing, and this is one of our best regular tour events that we have”.
“It’s not too challenging getting back into competitive mode because I miss it. When I haven’t played for a few weeks, I’m excited, I work hard, and I look forward to getting out on the course,” he added.
Rory McIlroy, Hunter Mahan and Tiger Woods are the other three players who have not played any event following the Masters.
Lee Westwood, however, participated in the Asian Tour’s Indonesian Masters, in which, he successfully defended the title to take the trophy for the second consecutive year.
Now, he will tee off for the first time on the PGA Tour after the Masters Tournament.
