Phil Mickelson shares seventh spot at the HP Byron Nelson Championship – Golf News
Four-time major champion, Phil Mickelson, fired a four-under par 66 in the final round of the HP Byron Nelson Championship to tie for the seventh position on Sunday, May 20, 2012.
The highlight of Mickelson’s performance on Sunday includes four consecutive birdies, starting from the fifth hole.
With the final two holes to play, he was six-under for the round. However, he faltered and carded two consecutive bogeys to finish off his campaign at the TPC Four Seasons Resort in Irving, Texas.
It was more of a disappointment especially when he had the chance of converting 17th into a birdie. He missed the birdie putt and the par putt as well forcing him to tap in for the bogey.
“I was certainly disappointed with not getting that birdie putt on 17,” he said. “I felt if I could get 17 or 18, get to 9 or 10 -- it's playing easy enough where I think there will be birdies coming in; you just never know. It was disappointing to have
missed that first putt. I don't know what happened on the second. I gave it my full attention, I left it like I wanted to, it spun out”.
According to him, he did try to make a comeback on the 18th and made a good third shot to land on the green. However, it again stopped 15 feet away from the pin and he failed to turn in the ball on the first try for the putt.
“18 I thought I missed a good shot, to be honest, I don't know how it came up short,” he said. “It was on a good line, 15 feet from the pin, not enough”.
Mickelson believes that he was horrible with the ball striking throughout the tournament. Moreover, the winds magnified the errors not allowing him to score low in the event.
He now plans to move to Colonial where he is scheduled to participate in the Crowne Plaza Invitational.
Golf commentators believe that Mickelson needs to work a little extra on his putting, which may help him remain in contention till the end of each event he plays.
