Phil Mickelson shows up early in the Masters to watch the Big Three – Golf News
Despite the fact that Phil Mickelson had the last tee time in the opening round of the Masters Tournament, he went early in the field to watch the ‘Big Three’, Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player, hitting the ceremonial tee shots of the tournament.
Mickelson told that he always wanted to see them playing and his wish came true on Thursday morning.
At the same time, the Big Three were also pleased to see Mickelson watching them play the tee shots. "A nice compliment," Nicklaus said.
"I thought it was wonderful that he came out," Palmer added.
Mickelson said that he wanted to see them each year. This year, he managed it in a great way. According to him, he really enjoyed the experience of watching the great legends of the game of golf.
"They're the Big Three and they brought the game to where it is. Anybody who has a chance to come to the Masters, it's worth getting up early to watch those guys tee off," he said.
Apart from that, Mickelson called them ‘charismatic’ personalities because of the appeal they have among the upcoming generations.
Yet, it will not be wrong to say that he has got the same charisma, as no one would like to come out early to join people in the gallery as he did on Thursday.
On the other hand, when he came out later in the day to play his round, he failed to impress his fans as he carded four bogeys and a triple bogey against five birdies to finish at two-over par 74.
The 10th hole proved to be the worst as his tee shot found the woods. Therefore, he had to search the ball that he failed to find. Later, he used the provision and finished the hole as triple bogey.
"I knew walking off the green at 4 over I wasn't going to get them all back before the round was through. But if I could just get a couple back, I felt like I could get some back on the following day," Mickelson said.
He is currently tied for the 55th position on the leaderboard.
