Phil Mickelson still in lead at Riviera – Northern Trust Open
As the game for the second round of Northern Trust Open came to its end due to bad light, there were some notable conclusions that need to be made.
However, one thing that remained unchanged was Phil Mickelson’s lead and his dominion status on the game that continues to prevail.
Even though, with the beginning of the second round of the event at Pacific Palisades, other competitors began to emerge strong such as Jarrod Lyle and Pat Perez, Mickelson was still able to maintain the top notch position.
It was, as termed by some, the looming competition that caused insecurity in Mickelson’s play and, hence, adversely affected the areas he could have easily scored more.
His start of the day was quite positive with the usual birdies, but feeling the pressure emerging from all sides he made a couple of shots that ended as bogeys.
In the penultimate session of the game, his shots deprived the confidence level that a champion like Mickelson needed to have in such crucial circumstances.
Despite all these complications and errors Mickelson was soon able to recover his position in the game.
With the help of an eagle at the penultimate hole, he was able to once again boost his confidence level to bounce back in the game with greater enthusiasm.
A birdie on the par-3 16th also proved beneficial for the player.
On the whole, some key shots before the final showdown helped Mickelson scoring one-under-par 70 and reinstate his credibility in the event.
It is important to mention here that after emerging as the winner of Pebble Beach Pro-Am event at Montreal Peninsula, Mickelson is being regarded as one of the classic golfers of all time.
The 41-year-old is looking in complete momentum and zeal to claim victory in his 41st PGA Tour event and for the fulfilment of this aim there can be no better place than Riviera for the American golfer.
Experts believe that Mickelson might have loosened his grip on the game, but he has definitely not lost control on his game. He therefore has a chance of making his return by performing with greater consistency.
