Phil Mickelson struggling to retain the automatic qualification spot for the Ryder Cup
With just one week remaining for the players to get an automatic entry into the Ryder Cup, through ranking among the top-eight players from the United States, Phil Mickelson is struggling to retain the eighth spot in the US team standings.
Since he tied for the third position in the Masters Tournament this year, he has not been able to record a good score in any of the tournaments that he played afterwards.
After announcing his withdrawal from the Memorial Tournament presented by Nationwide Insurance this year, he took a week off in order to get some rest prior to the start of the US Open.
However, his 16-over par overall score did not allow him to get a better position than a share of the 65th spot at the second major event of the year. Thereafter, he missed the cuts in both, The Greenbrier Classic and The Open Championship.
Last week, he once again faltered and tied for the 43rd position at the World Golf Championships – Bridgestone Invitational.
As a result, he now has only has an 81-point difference, as Hunter Mahan is chasing him with 4,082.228 points registered to his name.
This week will be pretty crucial for many American players, as they will compete at the renowned Ocean Course at the Kiawah Island Golf Club.
The fourth and final major event of the season, PGA Championship, will feature one of the toughest fields in the world. It is expected that breaking the par mark will be a challenging task and the winner may be decided with an over-par tournament score.
Therefore, players will not only try to list themselves on the top. In fact, they will also depend on other players to make mistakes and slip down the leaderboard.
Meanwhile, Mickelson will have to perform better compared to his recent performances. Otherwise, he will have to lose the automatic qualification card for the US Ryder Cup Team.
In that case, he will then have to rely on the captain’s pick. Davis Love III, the captain for the US Ryder Cup team, will pick four players from the United States to be a part of his squad.
