Phil Mickelson suggests renovation plans for the Northern Course at Torrey Pines
In a presentation that took more than an hour on Wednesday night, Phil Mickelson discussed his renovation designs for the North Course at Torrey Pines.
Mickelson said that golf is a highly technical game, and to make things worse for the people, the courses are designed in such a manner that it becomes even more difficult to play.
The American, Mickelson said that modern architecture is the sole reason why there has been a decline in golf. Golf is no more fun. It just keeps on pushing the player to his limits and takes out all the enjoyment from the sport.
The Northern part of the course is said to start from 2015. With a lucrative amount of money to finance the project, there will be tremendous expectations that need to be fulfilled.
The fairways and obstacles will be changed, and the course will undergo a completely new landscape setting.
All the bunkers and the greens will be rebuilt. Cart paths will be made and the irrigation system is to be replaced.
Mickelson is a major icon of golf in America. He has numerous credentials to his name. He was the closest rival on the fairways to one of the greatest golfers the world has ever seen – Tiger Woods.
Mickelson is a left-handed golfer who has a decent repute among the other golfers on the Professional Golf Association Tour.
With a dominating Tiger Woods claiming every tournament he participated in, Mickelson still managed to win four majors and a few titles on the tour to go with that.
There have been times in the early 2000’s that Mickelson displayed glimpses of brilliance on the courses that deserve to be lauded.
Although the American was usually sidelined with so much news on Woods during that time, he still managed to make an impression.
In the 90-minute presentation, he gave an insight on the project. In a statement, he said,
“Fairways and greenside areas that will feed shots toward the hole, not repel it away; chipping areas that will challenge better players but allow higher handicappers to putt from off the green; greenside bunkers placed to the sides and not the front of greens; at least one drivable par 4 on each nine; shorter holes for women and juniors”.
