Phil Mickelson takes halfway lead at the Wells Fargo Championship
Phil Mickelson fired a five-under par 67, in the second round of the Wells Fargo Championship, to take a two-stroke halfway lead, on Friday, May 3, 2013.
The US$ 6.7 million tournament is being staged at the Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, featuring some of the best players from different parts of the world.
The Wells Fargo Championship is known for attracting big names every year. This year too, the tournament organisers managed to feature top notch players, including the likes of world number two and reigning PGA champion Rory McIlroy, former world number
one Lee Westwood and Spaniard star Sergio Garcia.
The three-time Masters champion Mickelson started his campaign with a four-under par 68 on day one, and finished just one stroke behind a group of six players who led the first round.
The second round witnessed him making a strong start, as he birdies each of the first two holes that he played. He then added another two shots on the seventh and the ninth hole, to reach the turn in four under.
On the back nine of the course, he managed to add another two shots to his scorecard, while conceding a single bogey, to surge to the top of the leaderboard.
Talking the reporters after completing his round, Mickelson said that the greens were playing really well, and his putting technique greatly helped him post a good score on the leaderboard.
He now plans to remain consistent on the weekend, in a bid to record his second PGA Tour victory of the season.
"I think that the greens are putting very, very good, obviously, because I've putted them well," Mickelson said. "But with them being slower, we're able to putt them aggressively. We're able to take some of the break out without fear of racing it way by.
And I've made a concerted effort to leave uphill putts, which has allowed me to putt even more aggressive and play even less break. And that's made a big difference in my putting."
Scott Gardiner, Nick Watney and George McNeill were sharing the second spot on the leaderboard, after each posting a seven-under par two-round score.
