Phil Mickelson to tee off at Northern Trust Open
Phil Mickelson is ready to tee off the Northern Trust Open on Thursday, February 16, 2012, at the amazing location of Riviera Country Club, Pacific Palisades in California.
The 41-year-old American professional delivered his best at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am and successfully won the title with a two-stroke margin.
Now, after regaining his lost glory at Pebble Beach, he is keeping a close eye on another exciting tournament staged by the Professional Golf Association.
This will be the fifth tournament of PGA to be played by him. His performance has been attractive so far, as he added more spectators in his fan list by winning the last event.
The world No. 11 scored 17-under par and 269 strokes in total. He was able to be on top with the help of 19 impressive birdies and an eagle.
The final-day was the most refreshing for him, where he played a bogey-free game at Pebble Beach Golf Links. He impressively scored 6 birdies and an eagle.
His last round scores took him towards a two-stroke lead and no other player was able to alter his No. 1 position on the leader board.
"I'm truly appreciative that I get to play golf for a living," Michelson said, "and it's the people who come out and support the game that make that possible. That [signing autographs] should be the norm for everybody".
Mickelson thanked all the spectators for supporting him at Pebble Beach. Now, his focus is on the next tournament and he is planning to show some more impressive strokes.
There are many other professionals in the field at Riviera. He is again expected to face tough competition from his rivals. However, Tiger Woods will not be playing in the upcoming event.
Woods competed well against Mickelson at the Pebble Beach. However, it is not so simple to be on top again. Woods remained unsuccessful to outclass his rival.
Woods’ absence may go in his favour. Nevertheless, Luke Donald, the current world No. 1, is also in the field of Northern Trust Open.
This will be Donald’s first PGA tournament of the current season. He played at the European Tour in January and displayed amazing performances there. A pitched battle between both is expected.
The field is set and all the players will be teeing off on Thursday. The spectators are anxiously waiting to watch their favourites at Riviera Country Club.
