Phil Mickelson will defend his title next week at Shell Houston Open
Phil Mickelson is on his way to Texas to defend his title at the Shell Houston Open, scheduled to be held from March 29 to April 1, at the Redstone Golf Club, Tournament Course in Humble.
The tournament is being staged by the Professional Golf Association (PGA) and is also a final tune-up match before the Masters.
The field of the Shell Houston Open is tough and all the players will be competing for the $6,000,000 purse. Out of the total purse, the winner will earn $1,062,000.
Last year, Mickelson scored a 20-under 268 and won the title by three strokes against Chris Kirk and Scott Verplank.
Mickelson displayed an amazing performance and was the hottest player throughout the four days of the event.
"It feels really good for me to have played well and gained some momentum heading into next week," Mickelson said after winning the title and before moving to the Masters.
"I needed to have a week where I kind of put it together," he added.
The 41-year-old American professional golf player is currently standing at the 15th position. Since January, he has played seven events in total and showed a good game.
He is the proud winner of the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, played in February 2012. Similarly, he also played tremendously at the Northern Trust Open and finished on the second position.
Both the tournaments were organised by the PGA and his amazing strokes took him to the leading positions.
He competed well in most of the tournaments, which is why, he is fully confident for the upcoming event in Texas as well.
"It feels really good for me to have played well and gained some momentum heading into next week," Mickelson said. "I needed to have a week where I kind of put it together".
The Masters Tournament is the first major of the year. The field is tough and Mickelson has to face all the top-ranked players like Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, Lee Westwood, Luke Donald, Martin Kaymer and Steve Stricker.
Shell Houston Open is special for being played just a week before the mega major event that will offer an $8,000,000 purse. The Masters winner will earn $1,440,000 and 600 FedEx Cup points.
Mickelson has to deliver a more impressive game and put in extra efforts to finish the Shell Houston Open on top of the leaderboard.
