Phil Mickelson wins the Waste Management Phoenix Open for the third time
Phil Mickelson of the United States retained his lead in the final round of the Waste Management Phoenix Open, to record his third victory in the history of the tournament, on Sunday, February 3, 2013.
The Waste Management Phoenix Open was being staged at TPC Scottsdale, featuring some of the prominent names from different parts of the world.
His victory also marked the American’s 10th year in a row, with at least one PGA Tour victory in each year.
Right from the beginning of the tournament, the Lefty remained consistent and did not allow his rivals to get close to him on the leaderboard. He led all the four rounds, to record a stunning four-stroke victory over Brandt Snedeker.
He started his campaign with a scintillating 60 in the opening round, when he missed out on a chance to record 59 for the first time in the history of the PGA Tour.
The second and the third round witnessed him adding 65 and 64, respectively, to his scorecard. In the final round, he got off to a slow start, as he bogeyed the second hole that he played.
However, it did not have any effect on his confidence, as he made a strong comeback by recording five birdie putts, to finish the day with a four-under par 67, to accumulate a four-day total of 28-under par 256.
The 28-under par score was just two shots short of the lowest PGA Tour score record set by Tommy Armour III, at the 2003 Texas Open. Yet, Mickelson succeeded in tying the tournament record set by Mark Calcavecchia in the 2001 edition of the event.
Talking to the reporters after winning the tournament, Mickelson expressed his pleasure in returning to the winning circle early in the 2013 golf season.
“It’s been a year (since the last victory), so you want it bad, you know guys will be making moves behind you,” he said. “I had to get control of my thoughts after the first few holes. I was nervous heading into today’s round,” he said. “It means a lot to
get into the winner’s circle”.
