Phil Mickelson’s poor run continues at the Scottish Open
Phil Mickelson was not supposed to be at the Scottish Open initially. After his disappointing finish at the Greenbrier Classic, Phil got a late entry into the Scottish Open.
Phil was supposed to be in the Vatican City, touring with his wife and daughter but in a bid to regain some form before the British Open, he had to sacrifice his family time for his career.
Even at the Scottish Open, Phil could not get going. Once again, he had trouble while making approaches. Phil Mickelson was pretty disappointed by his first round effort, he shot 1-over 73.
Phil has been having some trouble in getting under 70s. After the Greenbrier Classic, the Lefty had planned to relax in the Italian atmosphere before the British Open. However, his performance at the Greenbrier forced him to change his plans.
As it stands now, Mickelson is 11 shots behind the leader Francesco Molinari, who broke a 40-year-old record at the Scottish Open, by shooting 10-under 62.
Molinari was in sublime form. Everything was working very well for him. Molinari’s putting was a treat to watch, as he made his putts with composure and comfort.
Lefty hopes to have a good second round so that he gets the chance to play over the weekend, he was expressing his views after the first round.
“The last couple of months I have played very poorly, and I added this week because I need to play a bit more,” Mickelson said.
“I am hoping to get a good round tomorrow so that I can play on the weekend, because I think this course is a great course to play links golf and get ready for the British Open”.
It was very unlike Mickelson to make a last minute appearance, as he generally puts his family over golf but this time it was other way round.
“My oldest daughter (Amanda) is very big into Greek and Roman history, and so we have been over in Rome the last few days. They were at the Vatican today. I was supposed to stay with them today,” said Mickelson, when he was asked why he chose Italy to spend
his family vacation.
