Phil Thompson tips Liverpool to challenge for the Barclays Premier League title – EPL News
Legendary Liverpool defender Phil Thompson believes ‘something big is happening’ at Anfield in the ongoing 2011/12 Barclays Premier League and has tipped the Reds to mount a stronger challenge for the domestic title this campaign.
The Merseyside club were one of the most active teams during the summer transfer window as the Reds signed seven new players. Liverpool are now being considered as firm favourites to challenge for the Barclays Premier League title.
Moreover, the Anfield club also started their campaign impressively as they are one of the few unbeaten teams in the League and currently placed third in the table, only two points adrift of the top spot.
However, manager Kenny Dalglish has shot down the club’s title chances, as he has been outlining on various occasions. The Merseyside club’s sole aim for this season is to earn UEFA Champion League, according to Kenny.
But Thompson feels that the Reds now posses the quality and strength in their squad to easily secure a top four finish and believes that Liverpool can also win the League if they manage to continue their impressive form.
The legendary defender told http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809’s official website, "If you look at the squad now I think something big is happening, but we have been there and had our false dawns before.”
Moreover, Thompson has also hailed the impact of Liverpool’s new owners, Fenway Sports Group, who has invested over £100 millions to bring new players to Anfield. The former defender now wants Kenny Dalglish’s men to repay the faith shown by their owners
by getting positive results on the field.
"We are a little more guarded now and rightly so, but as we've seen, since the change in ownership we all feel much more content and we're happy with what we're seeing from within the football club. Now we need it to be right on the pitch.”
Thompson believes that Liverpool’s performances against the weaker teams hold the key to their title hopes and is confident that the Reds’ will be a stronger force this season.
