Phil Vickery signs for Worcester Warriors – Rugby News Update
Phil Vickery, the 36-year-old former England prop has been appointed as the assistant forwards coach at Worcester Warriors for the next season. He is also known as the ‘raging bull’, and will assist Nigel Redman, who was appointed last week as the forwards
coach by the club.
Vickery had an outstanding career but it was cut short due to injury and he retired from professional rugby in October 2010. As a player he won all accolades and for more than a decade he was considered the premier England tight head prop.
The raging bull is excited at having joined the Warriors and is looking forward to helping the players for the next season. It will be a different experience for the player and he is looking towards his own development.
"Since I retired I've had the chance to try out a variety of new projects and I look forward to continuing to develop these areas, but rugby has always been my first love and I've kept in close touch with the game," Vickery said. "I know Hilly [head coach
Richard Hill] well from my Gloucester days and I've worked with Phil Larder and Nigel Redman before, so it's a coaching team I feel very comfortable joining.”
He will bring experience to the Warriors, and the former England captain will be able to turn the Worcester forwards into a formidable force. Vickery started his career with Gloucester in 1997, and a year later he was turning out for the national team, having
represented the England A a mere 81 days prior to his debut. He made his debut against Wales at Twickenham, on February 21, 1998.
He played at the 1999 Rugby World Cup, and in 2003 he was part of the England squad that won the tournament. He reached the zenith of his powers in 2007, when he was named England’s captain for the World Cup, leading the side to the final.
He also represented the British and Irish Lions, and his last international game was for the Lions against South Africa at Johannesburg, on July 4, 2009. The Warriors have made an astute signing in the ‘raging bull’.
