Philadelphia 76ers’ Evan Turner says he has a lot more confidence in his new shot: NBA News
When Philadelphia 76ers picked Evan Turner as No. 2 overall from the first round of the 2010 National Basketball Association Draft, they had hoped to land player who can spearhead the team in the years to come.
Turner collegiate level achievements had backed his high spot in the 2010 draft. He was the only player, who was selected unanimously on two occasions in the first team by both the press and coaches to the All-Big Ten team in 2008-09
and 2009-10 season.
Moreover, Turner was the best scorer and came second in both assists and rebounds in the conference during 2009-10 season. He has the honour to remain the best player in each of these two categories and was the first player to
end up in the top five, due to his excellent performance in every category in that season.
However, things went in the wrong direction, when the 22 year old started his rookie season with the Sixers.
Turner has always been a good rusher inside the perimeter, but to say that he has disappointed from outside the paint will be an understatement. He shot 37.6 percent from 10-15 foot jumpers, 37 percent from 16-23 foot jumpers,
and only 31.8 percent from the three-point range in his first year and his performances have left the Sixers with much to think about, especially at the shooting guard position.
However, Turner is making the most of the break due to the lockout and is trying hard to tweak his shooting skills and get back on track. According to Turner, the improvements are already there;
Expressing his thoughts, Turner said, “I feel like I’m back to my old self. I feel like my new shot is smoother. I have a lot of confidence in it. It’s going well….
“Well, I knew I had a hitch in my shot. I just wanted to get it together. I didn’t want to shoot any balls short anymore. I wanted to understand the basic principles of jump shooting, all of that, what to look for. (Hall of fame
coach Herb) Magee has been helping me out a lot.”
It was Philadelphia area legend and college coach Magee, who helped Turner with his biggest problems. Magee broke down everything and started from the very basics of the shooting in order to correct the mechanics of Turners jump
shot.
Turner responded well to Magee’s coaching. It was because that diligent off-season workout that Turner has improved his jump shot and is also looking more confident. However, only the time will tell how much difference Turner will
going to make with his overhauled shot in NBA.
