Philadelphia 76ers agree to a two year deal to retain Spencer Hawes – NBA News
In an expected move, Spencer Hawes has agreed to a two year contract extension with the Philadelphia 76ers worth $13.1 million.
Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports has reported about the extension.
“Free-agent centre Spencer Hawes has agreed to a two -year, $13.1 million contract extension with the Philadelphia 76ers, Hawes’ agent, Greg Lawrence, told Yahoo! Sports,” said Wojnarowski.
Hawes is entering his 6th year in the NBA and has already played two seasons for the Sixers. He was drafted as the 10th overall pick in the 2007 NBA Draft by the Sacramento Kings and got traded to Philadelphia in 2010.
In the 2010-2011 season, Hawes averaged 21.2 playing minutes while scoring 7.2 points and 5.7 rebounds per game. This past year, Hawes struggled with injuries and played 37 games of which he started only 29.  However, he improved his statistics from last season to 9.6 points and 7.3 rebounds. He played even better in the playoffs where he averaged 9.3 points and 6.6 rebounds over two playoff rounds this year.
He was particularly important for the Sixers in the first round playoff series against the Chicago Bulls where he scored 43 points in games 3 and 4 combined and helped the Sixers defeat the Bulls and move on to the Eastern Conference Semi Finals.
Hawes started off the 2011-2012 season exceptionally well when he averaged 12 points and 12.5 rebounds per game in the month of December, while shooting 67.6% from the field. However, he struggled the rest of the way with an Achilles injury which saw a considerable drop in his nightly numbers.
Hawes has been an important part of the Sixers recipe that has brought them success this season. They seem to be sticking with the same core that led them to a great start to last season and helped them reach the Eastern Conference Semi Finals.
The Sixers have made a good decision to keep him as once he fully recovers from the Achilles injury that has bothered him all season, he will be able to contribute to the Sixers much like he did at the beginning of last season and will be a critical factor in the Sixers run for another playoff berth next season.
