Philadelphia 76ers hire Hall of Famer Julius Erving aka Dr.J as a strategic adviser - NBA Update
Julius Erving has been hired by the Philadelphia 76ers as their strategic adviser. This was made official during the half time of the Sixers-Chicago Bulls game-3 on Friday.
"My advice will be across the board," Erving said. "I have built a relationship since last November which really opened this door for me."
Dr.J has a legacy that is stretched over more than 3 decades. He started his professional career with American Basketball Association’s Virginia Squires and went onto to play for New York Nets and finally the Philadelphia 76ers.
He played for the Sixers from 1967 to 1987 and took them to the NBA Championship in 1983.
Erving’s new job will require him to provide Sixers with consultation and he will be their front man for liaison with sponsors and fans. The 4 years contract also made him the good will ambassador.
The franchise could not have found a more suitable person for the job. The Hall of Fame wingman is the 3rd leading all time scorer in ABA and NBA and many of his moves – with the ‘slam’ dunk being the most prominent
– have now become the basic facets of the game. Erving said that he is available for the team 24/7.
“It made sense to me at this stage of my life," Erving said. "I'm looking forward to it. If I have something to offer, even if it's in the middle of the night, I will do it. I'm excited about this relationship and where it can
go in the seasons ahead."
He was humbled and reciprocated with gratitude.
"That felt great," he said. "I always enjoy coming back to Philadelphia where I had so many great memories. I'm excited about what the future holds."
In the post NBA life, Erving went onto embark on business ventures and established himself as sound entrepreneur. He has ventures in food chains and beverage industry and is also a minority owner of NASCAR Busch Grand National
Series team. He currently resides in Atlanta but he will be visiting Philadelphia on and off to carry out his duties.
