Philadelphia 76ers hold New Orleans Hornets to 62, win a low scoring affair – NBA Recap
In one of the lowest scoring games of the season so far, the Philadelphia 76ers defeated the New Orleans Hornets 77-62 here on Wednesday night at the New Orleans Arena. It was a low scoring affair throughout, but the Hornets particularly hurt their chances of picking up a victory after they scored only 10 points in the third period and the Sixers outscored them 21-10 in that period. A total of 62 points for the Hornets was the lowest score by any team so far in the season. Jrue Holiday led the Sixers from the front with 14 points, 12 assists and 5 rebounds, and was ably assisted by four Sixers players with double digit points. Al-Farouq Aminu was the only Hornets players in double digits, finishing with 10 points and 16 rebounds.
Both teams failed to get off the mark in the first period for the first 1:23 and Nick Young nailed a layup at the 10:37 mark to open the scoring for the game, putting the Sixers up 2-0. The Hornets scored their first points at the 9:15 mark, when Darius Miller hit a jump shot to tie the game at 2. At the 5:59 mark, the Hornets led 7-4 after Robin Lopez hit a dunk. The Sixers replied with a 6-0 run to take a 10-7 lead.
Four straight points by the Hornets near the end of the period put them up 19-14, but Hawes was able to score a driving layup in the final minute of the period to finish the low scoring quarter with the Sixers down 16-19. A three pointer by Royal Ivey in the second period for the Sixers tied the game at 23, and the Sixers took the lead through a layup by Young. The Hornets jumped back ahead through a layup by Lopez, and two free throws by Ryan Anderson put them up 37-34. Evan Turner scored a jump shot before the first half ended to have the Sixers trailing 36-37.
The Sixers found their rhythm early in the third period, opening the period on a 10-0 run to take a 46-37 lead. The Hornets failed to score till the 7:46 mark in the period, as they committed 5 turnovers in the opening four minutes. A three pointer by Anderson put the Hornets within five of the Sixers, but Philadelphia again went on a 6-0 run to extend their lead back to 57-46 as the Hornets only scored 1 free throw in the final four minutes of the third period. Philadelphia once again opened the final period on an 8-0 run to put them up 65-47, as the Hornets struggled to build any momentum on the offence. The Hornets did not score till the 8:35 mark in the period, and after Dorell Wright hit back to back three pointers to put the Sixers up 77-54, the game was over for all purposes. The Sixers won 77-62 in the end.
The Hornets shot 33.3 percent from the field and 4 of 19 from the distance. The Sixers were slightly better from the field at 41.7 percent and went 4 of 22 from three point range. the Hornets outscored the Sixers 47-43 in rebounds, but had 20 turnovers compared to 15 for the Sixers and failed to knock down shots.
