Philadelphia 76ers looks towards the future after impressive show this season – NBA News
The Philadelphia 76ers had a great 2011-2012 season. After a 41-41 season last year, the Sixers finished with a 35-31 winning season for the first time since 2004-2005 and won a playoff series for the first time since 2003.
The Sixers beat the top seeded Chicago Bulls in the first round of the playoffs, and then went on to extend their series with the Boston Celtics to 7 games. They were the overachievers of the year, the team that had everyone in
notice. The Phillies did eventually lose to Boston in game 7 on Saturday which ended their season, but had a number of reasons to be happy and satisfied with their performance over the season and the post season.
Now, they look to the future.
The Sixers are a young group with Evan Turner, Jrue Holiday and Louis Williams. Andre Iguodala and Elton Brand are the two veterans, and it is uncertain if they will return to the team for next season.
Iguodala, a long time Sixer, missed an exit interview with team management last season and was the speculation of trade as well. This season, he was much happier after being eliminated from the playoffs, saying that he would like
to come back and be a part of this team. If the Sixers want, they could trade him as after a marvellous season and an option on his contract, he is a good sell.
Elton Brand is going to be paid $18 million in the final of his five year contract next season. He averaged 11 points and 7.2 rebounds this season, and his performance has not yet justified the expensive contract he signed with
the Sixers. He has been playing with neck and shoulders injuries in the playoffs, and is scheduled to have an MRI on Monday.
"I want to be here, absolutely. If it is (over), I definitely loved my time here” said Brand.
Managing owner Joshua Harris said previously that under the right circumstances, they Sixers could use their amnesty clause on Brand. His future with the Sixers is hence, uncertain.
Louis Williams came off the bench for the Sixers in each game he played and still led them in scoring. He got the 2nd highest points after James Harden for the 6th man of the year award, finishing in 2nd
place behind Harden. He also has one year with the Sixers, but can opt out of the final year worth $6.4 million.
"If I was a betting man, I think I would be back. Obviously, it comes down to a deal, but I don't think that will be the hard part. This is home for me. I feel wanted here. I hope the feeling is mutual” said Williams.
Coach Doug Collins, who has done a remarkable job with this team, has said that he would like to complete the two remaining years on his contract.
“I sure feel better right now than I did two years ago standing here wondering where this all might head” said Collins.
After having a tough few years since the loss of Allen Iverson, the Sixers have finally something to look forward to. They have a first round pick in the NBA draft, a young team to build and strengthen and an inspiring coach. The
future looks bright for this Sixers team.
