Philadelphia 76ers pick up Dorell Wright from Golden State Warriors – NBA News
The Golden State Warriors have agreed to trade Dorell Wright to the Philadelphia 76ers, sources have informed on the condition of anonymity.
The deal cannot be announced until July 11th when the league moratorium is lifted. The Warriors will receive rights to Edin Bavcic of Bosnia and Herzegovina in return. The Sixers had initially acquired the rights to
Bavcic in a trade with the Toronto Raptors back in 2006.
Golden State had been looking for small forwards in the trade market, and after they drafted forwards Harrison Barnes of North Carolina and Draymond Green of Michigan State in the 2012 NBA Draft, it became clear that Wright would
be traded by the Warriors. The Bay Area franchise will now have an additional $4 million in cap space, giving them $8 million to spend before they enter the luxury tax.
The Philadelphia 76ers will amnesty Elton Brand after the July 11th moratorium to free up cap space to sign Wright. They have had a busy off season after surprising everyone with a successful playoff run that had them
reaching the Eastern Conference Finals, only to lose to the Boston Celtics in game 7.
The Sixers have also agreed to deals with Spencer Hawes and Lavoy Allen, and signed Nick Young to a one year contract. They have however let go of reserve guard Lou Williams, who had an amazing last season with them.
Wright was drafted out of high school by the Miami Heat with the 19th overall pick in the 2004 NBA Draft. He was traded to the Warriors before the start of the 2010-2011 season to free up cap space as the Heat prepared
to sign LeBron James and Chris Bosh. The deal served in Wright’s favour as he averaged 16.4 points and started all 82 games for the Warriors in the 2010-2011 season, finishing third behind Kevin Love and LaMarcus Aldridge in the most improved player of the
year voting.
He, however, struggled in the 2011-2012 season under new coach Mark Jackson and averaged 10.3 points per game. Wright is a brilliant perimetre shooter, when on song, and can be a good impact player for the Phillies next season.
The franchise will be hoping that a change of scenery helps him regain his confidence and pedigree.
