Philadelphia 76ers pick up Kwame Brown on a two year contract – NBA News
The Philadelphia 76ers have continued with their offseason team building and on Friday added former number 1 draft pick Kwame Brown to the roster on a two year contract.
The deal is reported to be worth $6 million. Brown’s agent, Mark Bartelstein, announced the acquisition on Friday.
Brown was the number 1 draft pick of the 2001 NBA draft, when he was drafted by the Washington Wizards. He played under Coach Doug Collins in his first season with the Wizards, and since has developed a good relationship with the
coach, which was one of the reasons he decided to come to Philadelphia. Collins is the current head coach of the Sixers.
"Kwame and Doug have a relationship that I think really has grown over the years. It's a great fit,” said Bartelstein.
Brown spent the last season with the Golden State Warriors where he got $7 million for one year. He only played in 9 games for the Warriors, before being sidelined for the season with a chest muscle injury that needed surgery.
He averaged 6.3 points and 6.4 rebounds in that season.
Brown was never able to live up to the expectations that come with being drafted number one. Over his 11 year career in the NBA, he has averaged 6.8 points and 5.6 rebounds, and never really entered the top echelon of players in
the NBA. He has only averaged double digit points in a full season once.
After playing four seasons with the Wizards, Brown moved to the Los Angeles Lakers, Memphis Grizzlies, Detroit Pistons and Charlotte Bobcats before ending up with the Warriors last season.
Brown will join a front court of the Sixers that boasts talent such as Spencer Hawes, Thaddeus Young, Lavoy Allen and Nik Vucevic. The Sixers just recently amnestied veteran forward Elton Brand to clear up cap space in order to
add some new players. Brand was the starting centre for the Sixers last season.
The Sixers have also acquired forward Dorell Wright from the Warriors and signed a deal with Clippers free agent Nick Young. They are looking to improve their performance from last year, where they lost in the Eastern Conference
Semi Finals to the Boston Celtics.
