Philadelphia 76ers use their amnesty clause on Elton Brand, make room for signings – NBA News
The Philadelphia 76ers have decided to use their amnesty clause on Elton Brand to get his final year salary worth $18 million off their books. Elton Brand was once one of the most intimidating big men in the NBA and had a few good playoff runs with the Los
Angeles Clippers. However, he played only 8 games for the Clippers in the 2007/2008 NBA season and was picked up by the Sixers after that.
Brand’s numbers dropped considerably after coming to the Sixers but he still gave them a good output over the years. This last season, Brand averaged 11 points and 7.2 rebounds per game while regularly starting for the Sixers. He is still a great asset to
have on your team, just too expensive at $18 million a year.
Brand will no longer be a part of the Sixers team but will still get the salary he is owed for next year. The Sixers will get that salary written off their books giving them cap space to go after other players. The Sixers needed the cap space to bring back
Spencer Hawes and sign Nick Young. They can also attempt to bring back reserve guard Louis Williams who opted out of his final year with the Sixers last month. However, with Young already coming into the line-up for next season, bringing back Williams will
not be a wise decision.
Brand is still a talented forward and will easily be picked up by some team looking to strengthen their bench or add depth and experience to their roster. He just became too costly at $18 million per year and the Sixers had no other way to reduce his contract
or manage him.
Under NBA amnesty rules, the teams which are presently under the salary cap can bid on Brand to hire his services. He will go to whichever team gives him the highest salary, and the difference between that and his $18 million salary for next year owed by
the Sixers will be paid by them.
The Dallas Mavericks, Houston Rockets, Cleveland Cavaliers and Phoenix Suns could all benefit from having Brand on their team.
