Philadelphia Eagles’ Fletcher Cox: I am looking forward to compete – NFL News
Philadelphia Eagles’ first-round pick in 2012 National Football League (NFL) draft, defensive tackle, Fletcher Cox, has indicated that he is ready to compete against other members of the team’s defensive unit to earn more field time.
Eagles already have a strong defensive line-up in presence of some senior players and Cox’s arrival in Philadelphia will add competition in the team.
Cox, who was the 12th overall pick in the first round, talked to media for first time after being drafted on Friday, April 27.
When asked how he was feeling after joining the team, Cox said that he had a little idea that Eagles would pick him.
Cox said:
"It’s been crazy. I just tried not to worry myself with it and I just let it happen. I was blessed enough to come where I wanted to come."
He added:
"It’s all about competition. I’m looking forward to competing against everybody on the defence."
On the other hand, Eagles’ head coach, Andy Reid has also praised the player’s talent and said that Cox’s addition in the unit will help Eagles’ cause of becoming a good football team.
Reid said:
"Even though he’s young, he’s mature and a smart, smart guy. This is just another piece of that puzzle that’s going to allow us to be a great football team."
Meanwhile, Eagles have selected three more players on second day of the draft.
They acquired California’s linebacker, Mychal Kendricks, in the second round, making him 46th overall pick. In the same round, they drafted Marshall’s defensive end, Vinny Curry, as 59th overall pick.
In the third round, they drafted Arizona’s quarterback, Nick Foles, as 88th overall pick.
On the last day of the draft, Eagles will have an opportunity to draft five more players during different rounds.
During the last NFL season, Eagles were unable to make a strong start and as a result they had to struggle throughout the season.
Although they registered a commendable comeback towards the end of the season and finished with winning and losing eight games respectively, they were unable to qualify for the playoffs.
Eagles are hoping not to return the same debacle again and that’s why it is crucial for them to build a strong squad through free agency and the draft.
