Philadelphia Eagles’ Michael Vick expects better performance from DeSean Jackson in next season
Philadelphia Eagles’ quarterback, Michael Vick, said on Tuesday, April 03, 2012, that he is expecting his teammate, wide receiver, DeSean Jackson, to perform better in the next National Football League (NFL) season after he was given a new contract by the
team.
Jackson, a two-time Pro Bowler, started his professional career with Eagles in 2008. He was selected in the prestigious Pro Bowl squad to represent the National Football Conference (NFC) in second as well as third year of his rookie contract.
However, his last season’s performance drew criticism from all corners as Jackson was unable to repeat the heroics and despite playing well, he could not match the standards he had set for himself.
He was even benched for one game by Eagles’ head coach, Andy Reid, as the player missed a team meeting and consequently faced the disciplinary action.
In 15 games of the last regular season, Jackson gained 961 yards and scored only four touchdowns. Jackson was in his last year of his rookie contract and he admitted that the expiring contract was distracting him and he was unable to focus on his performance.
After the end of his contract, Eagles placed their franchise tag on Jackson and later gave him a five-year deal.
Now, Vick thinks that after receiving the new deal, Jackson should be able to concentrate more on his game and display better performance in the last season.
He said:
"I think it will be easier for (him)."
Vick also said that he was happy that Jackson got the new contract. He said:
"We're very happy for DeSean. It was overdue. He finally got a chance to reap the benefits on how hard he worked."
The quarterback added:
"We expect him to work harder than before and give the organization everything he can.”
Soon after receiving the new contract, Jackson also took a sigh of relief and claimed that his team could get a shot at the Super Bowl in the next season.
Recently, the Eagles explored their options regarding signing of veteran quarterback, Peyton Manning, but no deal was reached.
Eagles have shown confidence in Vick and with guaranteed place of Jackson in the line-up, both players can team up well to silence their critics and play important role in leading the team to victories in the next season.
