Philadelphia Eagles’ Nnamdi Asomugha optimistic about 2012 season – NFL News
When the Philadelphia Eagles worked actively during the free agency market before the start of the 2011 National Football League (NFL) season, many observers including some of the team members began projecting them as one of the Super Bowl contenders.
At the end of the season, however, Eagles did not even qualify for the playoffs. They started the season in an unconvincing manner and despite recovering from the slump towards the end they ended up winning eight games only.
Many explanations have come from different observers in an attempt to provide a logical reason for the team’s failures, but Eagles’ defensive back, Nnamdi Asomugha, who played his first season for the team last year, has come up with another explanation.
While giving an interview for an upcoming Rich Eisen Podcast, Asomugha mentioned that the Eagles had been in a rebuilding phase before the start of the last season.
According to Asomugha, Eagles’ acquisition of many star players during the free agency created all the hype, but, he maintained, the rebuilding phase cannot be completed overnight.
He was of the view that the players needed some time to develop good understanding and the last season provided them the chance of doing that.
Asomugha himself joined the Eagles after playing eight seasons for the Oakland Raiders.
He said:
“Last year we were coming together and things happened very quickly for us coming together, so there was a lot of newness with players and coaches, and it just didn’t come together as quickly as we would have liked it to.”
That being said, Asomugha thinks that since the Eagles began performing as a unit towards the end of the season, they can pose a serious threat to their opponents in the upcoming season.
“I just think it goes to show that it takes time to build a team in the ultimate team sport that we’re playing. In football you just can’t do it overnight. That’s kind of what happened last year and that’s why we’re in this position this year where we’re
looking forward to getting back out there.”
No matter how much attempts Asomugha or any other Eagles makes to defend the team, the players will stay in the line of fire until and unless they prove their critics wrong on the field.
