Philadelphia Eagles QB Michael Vick to retain starting role, confirms head coach Andy Reid – NFL News
The speculations regarding replacing Philadelphia Eagles starting quarterback Michael Vick have died after head coach Andy Reid officially confirmed that the player would remain their starter for Week 9 game against New Orleans Saints.
Talking to reporters on Thursday, Reid confirmed his stance given a day earlier claiming that Vick would remain starter. The coach even went on to say that he had never planned to bench Vick.
According to the details present on the team’s website, Reid said:
“Michael, in regards to that, was the quarterback, is the quarterback and will continue to be the quarterback of the Philadelphia Eagles. I can't make it any clearer than that.”
The head coach added:
"My point wasn't that I was going to bench Michael Vick. It was that I needed to step back and evaluate before I came to you with something."
Rumours regarding replacing Vick have been doing the rounds since the start of the season as the player has not been able to display his true class, though he claims to be trying his best.
The Eagles are not having an ideal season and with the season halfway through their playoff hopes seem very blurred.
Towards the start of the season when Eagles managed to win a few games, Vick was miserable as he struggled with his accuracy a number of times. The ensuing games did not see any improvement in his game as he kept on throwing interceptions and giving away
the ball.
However, his performance during the last few games has been better as far as accuracy is concerned. Although Eagles have not won many games of late, Vick has managed to find his receivers properly while maintaining control of the ball on the field.
This is something that has impressed Reid, who is not asking Vick to do more. The head coach wants the veteran to just lead the side as he has done in the past. Reid said of Vick:
"He eliminated any turnovers that he'd had whether it was fumbles or interceptions. He gave the receivers an opportunity to catch the football. He just needs to continue to lead this football team. He is the leader of the team. He understands that."
