Philadelphia Eagles QB Nick Foles to start rest of the games, confirms coach Andy Reid – NFL News
Philadelphia Eagles head coach Andy Reid has confirmed that rookie quarterback Nick Foles will start all the games for the rest of the season.
The decision has come in light of the rookie’s improved performances during the last few games, while recovery status of veteran quarterback Michael Vick was also considered.
Foles got the starting role because Vick was forced out with a concussion. The rookie has not yet led the team to a win, but has shown improvement in his performance since his first game.
Initially, he was unable to control his passes and gave away turnovers, but he reduced them in the next game and completely controlled the turnovers in the last game. However, he is yet to create scoring drives consistently.
The Eagles, who are at the bottom of National Football Conference (NFC) East, have no chance of qualifying for the playoffs this season and now they are planning to prepare a squad for the next seasons.
In such a situation, giving more playing time to youngsters will help determine their true potential while assisting them in getting matured.
According to the details present on the team’s website, Reid said:
"Because Mike still hasn't passed the test, today I'm going to name Nick Foles as the starting quarterback for the remainder of the season.”
Like other players who suffer concussion, Vick has to follow the National Football League (NFL) protocols before being able to play again. He will need to get a green signal from an independent neurologist while he will also have to pass some physical test
to get the clearance.
Reid said of Vick and his recovery:
"Mike's on a fast track here, so hopefully we might be able to get him back this weekend but we'll see how that goes.”
Explaining the reason behind giving starting to Foles for the rest of the season, Reid said:
“Number one is (Vick's) health obviously. Number two, which is also important, is it gives one of our young players an opportunity to play here the next four games as the starter.”
Appreciating the rookie quarterback, the Eagles head coach said:
“He handles things in a pretty cool manner and I think he'll continue to do that.”
