Philadelphia Eagles’ WR DeSean Jackson advises RB LeSean McCoy against holding out – NFL News
Philadelphia Eagles’ wide receiver, DeSean Jackson, has advised his teammate, running back, LeSean McCoy, against pressing his contract demands too much, saying that the running back should not miss the team’s training camp.
McCoy’s current contract with the Eagles is going to expire after the upcoming season.
Jackson, who joined the National Football League (NFL) in 2008, faced a similar contract situation last year and he did something which he does not want McCoy to do.
Jackson spoke of receiving long-term job security from the team and held out of the training camp before the start of the season.
He did not receive the contract extension and spent the complete season without knowing his future.
Owing to the uncertainty about the future, his performance was also affected and he later admitted that the expiring contract was a cause of distraction for him throughout the season.
Recently, Eagles gave Jackson a long-term, lucrative contract, but the wide receiver does not want McCoy to go through the phase he went through last year.
Jackson has urged McCoy not to affect his performance by worrying over contract.
According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, Jackson said it would be in best interest of McCoy not to miss the training camp. He said:
“Looking back now it really hurt me more than I thought it helped me. Hopefully he saw everything I went through, and hopefully [agent] Drew [Rosenhaus] won't have him go through the same thing."
Jackson was of the view that missing the camp reflected negatively on his reputation. He also asserted that it was not easy to convince the Eagles’ management by being authoritative, and commented:
"I just hope he doesn't take it there with the team because the Eagles are a team you don't want to try force anything with them or strong-arm them, because you know Joe Banner, Howie Roseman, Coach [Andy] Reid, they're not the easiest people to force to
get things with."
Jackson’s concern is appreciable given that he is trying to help his teammate, but no official word on the development has been given by McCoy yet.
According to different reports, however, McCoy’s contract negotiation with the team is going fine and both parties are not facing any deadlock over it.
