Philadelphia Eagles acquire DeMeco Ryans from Houston Texans – NFL News
In what seems to be a blockbuster trade, Philadelphia Eagles acquired linebacker, DeMeco Ryans, from Houston Texans on Tuesday, March 20, 2012, by compromising their fourth-round pick in the upcoming National Football League (NFL) drafts in favour of the
Texans.
Ryans started his professional NFL career with Texans in 2006 and played for the team as a regular starter since then.
He signed a six-year, $48 million contract extension with Texans in March 2010, but joined Eagles without completing the tenure. The trade, however, is seemingly precious for Eagles.
While announcing Ryans’ appointment, Eagles’ general manager, Howie Roseman, thanked Houston Texans for making the trade possible and expressed excitement over the addition of a new member in the squad.
He said:
"We’re thrilled to be able to add a young and productive linebacker in DeMeco Ryans. We’d like to thank [Houston general manager] Rick Smith and the Texans.”
Meanwhile, Eagles’ head coach, Andy Reid also seems pleased with the hiring of the two-time pro bowler. The coach thinks that Ryans could provide great strength to the team’s defensive unit.
The coach said:
"DeMeco is a proven Pro Bowl linebacker in this league and we’re excited to be able to plug him into the middle of our defence. He’s been the signal caller and a leader on a very good Texans defence for the last several years. He’s a tough, instinctive football
player and he’ll be a great fit for our team."
Eagles also acquired some high-profile players before the start of the last NFL season, but the team failed badly at the beginning of the regular season.
When Eagles regrouped and started to find their rhythm, they were already behind and despite winning their last four games of the regular season, they could not qualify for the playoffs.
However, the management thinks that the players have now spent time with each other and their chemistry will certainly yield more benefits on the field in the next season.
On the other hand, Ryans’ departure from Texans has come as surprise for many.
Texans’ defensive end, J.J. Watt, said that it was tough to see Ryans go, while another defensive end, Antonio Smith, reflected at the player’s calibre by saying that Texans are going to miss him.
