Philadelphia Eagles and quarterback, Trent Edwards, join hands for one year – NFL News
In an attempt to further strengthen their quarterback position, Philadelphia Eagles on Thursday, February 23, 2012, signed Trent Edwards to a one-year deal.
Now with the presence of Michael Vick and Vince Young coupled with the addition of Edwards, it seems unlikely that the Eagles will chase a quarterback in the upcoming National Football League (NFL) drafts.
While announcing the deal, Eagles’ general manager, Howie Roseman, informed that Edwards had expressed a desire to play with Eagles.
Roseman was of the view that Edwards would be a good fit in Eagles’ line-up.
The general manager said of Edwards:
"He has expressed a desire to be a part of our team. He's a guy that we liked and we saw him out there and we thought maybe he would be a good fit."
Edwards started his professional NFL career in 2007 when Buffalo Bills selected him in third round of the drafts.
In his rookie year, Edwards started nine games while playing 10 and got 1,630 yards with an average of 6.1 yards per attempt.
He started and played 14 games in the next year and registered 2,699 yards with an average of 7.2 yards per attempt.
He remained inconsistent and injury riddled in the next year and could only start seven out of eight games in 2009.
The next year, which proved to be his last with Bills, was even more miserable as he played in only two games.
Bills waived him off and he was claimed by Jacksonville Jaguars as their backup quarterback.
Following the end of the season, he became a free agent and joined the Oakland Raiders, who released him after less than two months.
The 28-year-old Edwards has not played any game since then. Roseman said of the new acquisition:
"He's a guy who has had success in the NFL. He's started in this league, had won and has also had some adversity. When we see a guy out on the street that we think has some ability, we'll bring him in and we'll take a look and he knows nothing is promised
in this game."
It is still not clear what role will Edwards be given as the Eagles already have two quarterbacks, but the management is staying on the safe side considering the debacle it faced at the crucial quarterback position in the last season.
