Philadelphia Eagles’ head coach, Andy Reid, announces appointment of Todd Bowles – NFL News
Philadelphia Eagles’ head coach, Andy Reid, on Tuesday, January 31, 2012, officially announced the appointment of Todd Bowles as the team’s secondary coach.
Bowles, who was serving Miami Dolphins before joining Philadelphia, had already come to terms with the Eagles’ management a day earlier. However, an official announcement in this regard was awaited.
Bowles joined Dolphins in 2008 as the team’s secondary and assistant head coach.
However, following the dismissal of Dolphins’ head coach, Tony Sparano, Bowles was made interim head coach for three weeks.
Dolphins won two out of three games under Bowles, who parted ways with the franchise when it appointed Green Bay Packers’ offensive coordinator, Joe Philbin, as its new head coach.
Meanwhile, Reid also confirmed that Juan Castillo will continue to serve as Eagles’ defensive coordinator.
While addressing media for the first time after the National Football League (NFL) regular season, Reid also revealed that he had offered a coaching job to Steve Spagnuolo, who was fired from the post of St. Louis Rams’ head coach after the season.
Reid said:
“Steve and I are good friends and we talked throughout the season as we do every year. When Steve was released from the Rams I did offer him a spot here to coach, if he needed one, a place to land with open arms.”
During the regular season, it was speculated that Eagles would fire Castillo and bring Spag as his replacement.
Castillo himself did not know about his future and the uncertainty prevailed until the start of this week when it was clarified that Castillo would not go anywhere else.
Reid was of the view that the addition of Spag would have given strength to the coaching staff and maintained that there is nothing wrong in appointing two experienced coaches in the same capacity.
Reid added:
"And my feeling was that you can have two great coaches on defence and that's even better than just having Juan himself, so that's about as far as it went there. We didn't talk about titles. We didn't go into any of that."
Now that the coaching staff is finalised, the management is eyeing the upcoming NFL drafts, which could give the team a few new faces.
