Philadelphia Eagles’ head coach, Andy Reid, surprised to hear about ‘bounty system’ – NFL News
Philadelphia Eagles’ head coach, Andy Reid, is the latest from the National Football League (NFL) to express his reaction over the ‘bounty system’ that is the brainchild of current St. Louis Rams’ defensive coordinator, Gregg Williams.
Reid was rather surprised to know about the existence of this system, which encouraged players to hit and knock their opponents out and gain monetary rewards in return.
An NFL investigative report, released last week, unearthed facts that proved that Williams’ three-year tenure with New Orleans Saints from 2009 to 2011 was filled with these ill acts.
The report also alleged that Saints’ general manager and head coach was also aware of this malpractice.
Following the revelation, Williams accepted his mistake and apologised for his actions. However, his ‘pay for performance’ strategy is still receiving criticism from every corner.
Reid was of the view that such system is against the spirits of the sport. He said:
"I think I am surprised. I haven't read all the documents, but by definition of the word 'bounty,' you don't do that with other (teams') players. That's not where you go. That's not how you do business. ... Players want to hit you and hit you hard, but they
don't want to come in and, like, ruin your career. ... That's just not how guys are wired."
Meanwhile Reid has also said that he expected wide receiver, DeSean Jackson, to sign the franchise tender.
Following the end of Jackson’s four-year rookie contract with the team, the Eagles recently placed their franchise tag on the player hoping to sign a long-term deal in future.
Jackson has not yet signed the tender and if he does not sign it he could also join any other team of the league, but that team will have to provide two compensatory draft picks to Eagles.
However, that is unlikely to happen as both Eagles and Jackson expressed satisfaction over the idea of putting the tag on the player as there is strong chance of reaching a long-term deal within the next few months.
Reid said:
"I think he'll sign the tender. He was very positive about it.”
Meanwhile, Reid has also implied that Eagles will not be interested in signing Peyton Manning, who has recently been axed by Indianapolis Colts.
When asked about hiring Peyton, Reid said he was happy with the present quarterback, Michael Vick.
