Philadelphia Eagles’ head coach Andy Reid: I don’t agree with bounties – NFL News
Philadelphia Eagles’ head coach, Andy Reid, has reiterated his stance over the infamous bounty scandal, saying that he does not believe in the bounties and that the National Football League (NFL) commissioner, Roger Goodell, did the right thing by suspending
the players and officials involved in the scandal.
According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, Reid strongly rejected the idea of offering monetary rewards to the players for knocking their opponents out and said that Goodell rightly held the responsible people accountable in this matter.
Reid said:
"I don't agree with bounties. I know I don't believe in that, and I know I support what the commissioner did."
He added:
"When you talk to the players, do they want to put a nice hit on somebody? Absolutely. Do they want to maim them, hurt them where they can't make a living? No. Guys don't want to ruin another man's career."
Some months ago, an NFL investigation revealed that the New Orleans Saints had been running an illegal bounty programme and their defensemen had been receiving monetary rewards from the management for knocking their opponents out.
Those who were brought under the line of fire for introducing and allowing this programme to run included defensive coordinator, Gregg Williams, who had just joined the St. Louis Rams when the investigation unearthed the facts.
Saints’ general manager and head coach were also targeted by the league as they both were aware of the illegal programme.
Later, the league took stern measures and placed an indefinite ban on Williams and awarded short-term penalties to other officials.
Not only that, the players who received the bounties were also not spared and they had to face some serious action as well.
The bounty scandal received a mix response with some people speaking in its support, but those who were against it easily outnumbered its supporters.
Goodell stayed active throughout the investigation and was also criticised by some stakeholders over his actions.
However, Reid thinks that the NFL commissioner is doing his job perfectly. He said:
"He's making people accountable for their work and what they say and what they do, and I don't think that's bad. Do people like change? No, people don't like change, so there's going to be people that gripe.”
