Philadelphia Eagles must support hype with performance
In their long franchise history, Philadelphia Eagles have never been able to win any Super Bowl title. To make the matters worse, they have only two Super Bowl appearances to their credit.
Their recent Super Bowl loss was in the 2004 season. They were defeated by the New England Patriots after a close encounter and have not been able to qualify for the title game so far.
They qualified for the playoffs four times after the last Super Bowl loss, but were unable to make the most out of them.
It is interesting and ironic for Eagles not to win the National Football League (NFL) title despite having very good squads.
Take their 2011 squad for example. Before the season, the Eagles claimed to have the “Dream Team”. Their claim was justified given they had acquired many reputable players during that offseason to strengthen their offence.
They seemed so true to their claims that even some critics also supported their views.
However, they were unable to live up to that hype and failed to impress during the season or at least for most part of the season.
After winning three of their four preseason games, Eagles made an assertive start to the season after beating St. Louis Rams in the opening game. However, they collapsed afterwards and slumped to lose four games in a row.
Their defence was badly exposed as their opponents were easily getting plenty of scoring moves.
Eagles tried to combine and failed every time. When they finally began playing like a team, the season was almost over. Although they did cause some stir in the National Football Conference (NFC) East by winning their last four games, they were not able
to qualify for the playoffs.
They made a lot of excuses after the season and the most prominent of them was that the players had not been able to train properly owing to the lockout before the start of the season.
Let’s put everything aside and accept their excuse.
As they enter the 2012 season, Eagles once again have a brilliant squad capable enough of winning the Super Bowl. The players played together last year and got the necessary workouts this offseason. For some of their players, it was the best workout ever.
That’s encouraging.
Eagles have now again started to create the hype. Quarterback Michael Vick feels that the Eagles can build a dynasty based on their current roster. What else he can say? The “Dream Team” excuse was already used to create hype for the previous season.
Vick himself has a lot to prove this time. He has been rated by many as one of the best quarterbacks present in the league at the moment, but there is no use of being the best if the title is not won.
Vick has said that he is focusing on taking the team to the playoffs. Good for him, but the fans need them to win the conference championship and represent the NFC in the Super Bowl this time.
The hype is again there, so is the talented roster. The fans are the same and the franchise is once again looking to answer the critics. A disturbing but honest advice for Eagles: Don’t create too much hype if you cannot transform it on the field.
