Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick misses practice – NFL News
Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick did not practise on Wednesday, August 22, 2012, as the doubts around his participation in the Eagles’ third preseason game on Friday against Cleveland Browns grow stronger.
However, there is no denying that the quarterback will start the regular season opener against the Browns on September 09, the team has claimed.
During the Eagles’ second preseason game that was played on Monday against the New England Patriots, Vick received a hit that injured his ribs and forced him out. He had only spent limited time on the field.
Eagles head coach Andy Reid said of the hit:
"That was a pretty good shot he took. It was in a soft spot, and a good shot he took.”
In Vick’s absence, rookie Nick Foles is going to start the preseason game against Browns. However, it is necessary for Vick and the team that the quarterback stays in shape and be hundred percent in the season opener.
Vick has a history of injuries and he is not very consistent when it comes to playing the entire season without missing any game.
Reid is of the view that Vick needs to take some reps to prepare for the season opener, but at the same time the coach has also maintained that Vick is an experienced player and that if he is unable to practise it might not bother the team.
Reid said:
"Would I like him to have some more reps? Would he like more reps? Yeah, I'm sure both of us would like him to have more reps, but you bank on his maturity and experience to get him through a situation like this. So, that's what we'll do."
Eagles have so far had a pretty good preseason. They have won the first two games, beating Pittsburgh Steelers (24-23) and Patriots (27-17).
After facing Browns on Friday, the Eagles will play their last preseason game against New York Jets on August 30.
Vick still has around two weeks to get back in proper shape. By the looks of the things, if Vick misses the two preseason games, but keeps on practising, even lightly, he will be good to go in the regular season. However, if he stays on the sidelines for
the entire preseason and plays in the regular season opener he might not be able to give his best shot.
