Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick receives coach Andy Reid’s backing – NFL News
Although Philadelphia Eagles were able to win their 2012 season opener on Sunday against Cleveland Browns, there were many flaws in the Eagles performance, especially on their offence.
Eagles quarterback Michael Vick provided the game-winning touchdown late in the final quarter, but his overall performance was not very appreciable.
Vick badly struggled with accuracy during the game in which he completed a total of 29 passes of 56 attempts while covering 317 yards. He got two touchdowns in the game, but also sent four interceptions.
His interceptions particularly are being highlighted in the debates focusing the lacklustre performance of the Eagles offence. However, Eagles head coach Andy Reid believes that Vick should not be the only one to take the blame.
According to Reid, it was a team effort in which the quarterback, the receivers, the coaches and everyone else played together and the coach is of the view that the blame should be accepted by everyone.
Reid said:
“Michael took the blame yesterday. It wasn't a one-man show. Everybody had a piece of this pie. From me to the coaches ... to the play-calling, the penalties. ... You start looking at 456 yards of total offense and you're not putting it in the end zone,
that's ridiculous.”
A day earlier, Vick took the blame and agreed that he needed to improve. Reid does not negate the notion that the quarterback needs to improve, but he maintains that others around him must also improve. He said:
"Everybody had a piece of this. It's always going to fall on the quarterback's shoulders. He takes the responsibility and he takes it to heart. But when you put on the tape, everybody has to do their job.”
The Eagles had a pretty impressive preseason as they won all four games and they did well to carry the winning momentum in the regular season after edging past the Browns.
However, they might not be able to retain the winning run if they continue to play like this. Their next encounter is scheduled against Baltimore Ravens, who are one of the strongest defensive units in the league, and based on the performance Eagles displayed
against Browns, Ravens will not have any difficulty beating them.
