Philadelphia Eagles’ quarterbacks coach Doug Pederson: Michael Vick should avoid turnovers –NFL News
Philadelphia Eagles’ quarterbacks coach, Doug Pederson, has cited turnovers as the main reason behind Michael Vick’s sloppy performance in the 2011 National Football League (NFL) season let alone the team’s failure.
Last year, Eagles gave a total of 38 turnovers, the second-most in the league.
Vick played and started 13 games and ended up throwing career-high 14 interceptions and lost four fumbles. He gave up the ball 18 times, twice to the number he had registered a year before.
Pederson is of the view that if Vick had controlled his passes the performance of offensive unit might have been much better.
According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, Pederson asserted that Vick tried too much and ended up mixing his plays.
He said of Vick:
“He gets caught sometimes doing too much, trying to do too much, ad that’s where he gets in trouble. We eliminate those and keep him within our system, and positive things are going to happen.”
A positive development, however, in this matter is that Vick is aware of his mistakes.
He watched his last year’s tapes with Pederson and realised his flaws. This has made the coach’s job slightly easy as he will be able to work in perfect coordination and chemistry with Vick now.
Pederson said:
"He's learned from that. I think it makes him a better quarterback going forward, obviously. If we cut those two areas down, be more efficient in the red zone, don't turn the ball over as much ... your chances of success obviously go up."
Pederson mentioned that the players were unable to train with the coaches last year due to the NFL lockout and missing the offseason affected the team quite badly.
There was no offseason conditioning programme, no workouts or organised team activities (OTAs) and the players just had a training camp before preseason games to get into shape.
Pederson said that if Vick or other players had been given the opportunity to sit with coaches and learn the playbook while watching previous tapes, they would not have performed disappointingly.
After having all these opportunities at this time of the year, Pederson is hopeful of better performance from Vick.
