Philadelphia Eagles searching for a defensive coordinator
The Philadelphia Eagles are currently searching for a defensive coordinator to take the place of Sean McDermott.
McDermott had been a defensive backs coach. Under him, Brian Dawkins and Michael Lewis both went to the Pro Bowl as safeties for the first time in history. Lewis then went on to the Pro Bowl two more times under McDermott in 2006 and 2007. In 2009 he was
named interim defensive coordinator after defensive coordinator Jim Johnson left on medical leave. Two months after becoming interim defensive coordinator, McDermott’s interim tag was removed due to the death of Johnson. He was then fired on January 15, 2011.
However, things don’t look to bad for McDermott. The Denver Broncos and Carolina Panthers have already expressed interest in acquiring him for the same position. The Eagles, however, have a more difficult task of narrowing down their candidates to find one
that would be suitable as new defensive coordinator.
The Eagles have currently discussing terms with Jim L. Mora who was formerly a head coach for the Atlanta Falcons and Seattle Seahawks. They have already had talks with former Cleveland Browns defensive coordinator Rob Ryan, twin brother of New York Jets
head coach Rex Ryan, but he ceased talks and joined the Dallas Cowboys as their defensive coordinator.
Besides Mora, Eagles assistant d**k Jauron is also in the running for the Job. He was given permission by the team to be interviewed for the Browns as their defensive coordinator. Recently fired Arizona Cardinals’ defensive coordinator Billy Davis is also
one of the candidates for the job in Philly.
Since promoting McDermott to defensive coordinator, the Eagles seasons had their fair share of ups and downs. Their red zone defense is ranked as the worst in the league and their shoddy performance against the Green Bay Packers in the NFC Wild Card playoff
game was proof of the ranking.
Although the Eagles have been eliminated from the playoffs, they still need a defensive coordinator as soon as possible. The Pro Bowl is coming up on January 30 and Michael Vick, along with five other players from the Eagles, will be traveling to Honolulu,
Hawaii to play for the NFC team at Aloha Stadium.
